Why Did My Google Reviews Disappear? 9 Real Reasons (and How to Get Them Back)

You had 60 reviews on Monday. On Friday you have 48. Nobody deleted them, you didn't change anything — they just vanished. If that's you, you're not imagining it, and you're not alone. Google quietly removes millions of reviews a month, and it almost never tells the business why.

The good news: reviews disappear for a handful of specific, predictable reasons. Once you know which one hit you, you know what to fix — and how to make sure it doesn't keep happening.

First, the two kinds of "disappeared"

Before you panic, figure out which situation you're in:

1. A few reviews vanished while the rest are fine. This is almost always Google's spam filter catching individual reviews it doesn't trust. Annoying, sometimes recoverable, rarely fatal.
2. A whole batch vanished at once, or your whole profile is gone. This is enforcement — Google decided a pattern on your profile looks like manipulation. More serious, and the focus of the second half of this guide.

The 9 reasons Google removes reviews

1. The spam filter flagged them

Google runs every review through an automated filter before and after it posts. If the review "looks" risky — a brand-new account, a review posted from the same network as dozens of others, text that resembles other reviews — the filter can hide it. This is the single most common reason a legitimate review disappears.

2. They were left on a device in your store

This is the big one nobody warns you about. If customers leave reviews on a tablet or a phone you hand them at the counter, Google sees many reviews coming from one device on one network. That pattern looks exactly like fake reviews, so the filter eats them. Reviews should always be left on the customer's own phone.

3. A burst of reviews arrived at once

Went from 2 reviews a month to 30 in a week? Google's fake-engagement systems read sudden spikes as bought or coordinated activity. A natural profile grows steadily; a spike gets filtered — and the reviews from that spike are the first to vanish.

4. The text looked machine-made

Reviews assembled by software — tap-to-select phrases, templates, or text generated by AI — share subtle fingerprints: similar sentence structure, repeated phrasing across different reviewers. Google's language models are very good at spotting this now, and reviews written by AI are removed in sweeps, sometimes months after they post. 5. You offered something in return

A discount, a free coffee, entry into a prize draw — any incentive makes a review a policy violation, even if the experience was genuine. Incentivized reviews get removed, and repeat offenders get flagged.

6. The reviewer's account was removed

If Google terminates a spammy account, every review that account ever left disappears — including your legitimate one. You did nothing wrong; the reviewer's other behavior took your review down with it.

7. Prohibited or off-topic content

Reviews with profanity, personal information, links, promotions, or rants unrelated to the actual experience get pulled for content violations.

8. Google merged, moved, or edited your listing

If your Business Profile was merged with a duplicate, or your address/category changed, reviews can detach or vanish in the shuffle. This is a data problem, not a penalty.

9. A competitor (or a filter) flagged them as fake

Anyone can report a review. A wave of reports — or the filter's own suspicion — can hide reviews while Google "investigates," and they don't always come back.

How to tell which one hit you

• Only your newest reviews vanished → spam filter or a velocity spike (reasons 1, 3).
• Reviews from around the same date all went → a device/kiosk problem or a bought-review sweep (reasons 2, 5, 9).
• Random old reviews gone → the reviewers' accounts were removed (reason 6).
• Everything's gone / a "suspicious activity" warning → profile-level enforcement. Take this seriously.

Can you get disappeared reviews back?

Sometimes. Your options, in order:

1. Wait a few days. Filtered reviews occasionally return on their own once the filter re-evaluates them.
2. Ask the customer to check their review is still visible when signed in. If they see it but you don't, it's filtered — and there's no button to un-filter it.
3. Use Google's "Report a problem" / profile support to flag wrongly-removed reviews. Be specific and factual. Recovery isn't guaranteed.
4. Stop the cause. If a kiosk or an incentive or a review generator caused it, no appeal will help until you remove the cause — the reviews will just keep vanishing.

Be honest with yourself here: if reviews disappeared because of how you collected them, chasing the lost ones is less important than fixing the method.
